Fat-soluble
An Ayurvedic resin. AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid) inhibits 5-LOX, reducing pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. A "natural ibuprofen" for chronic joint inflammation.
Dose300–500 mg standardized (≥30% AKBA)
TimingWith lunch
FoodWith a meal (fat)
TimeMin. 4 weeks for effect
For whom it is especially useful
- A stiff knee in the morning or after sitting for a long time.
- Chronic joint pain under a high training volume.
- Those who need to avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) because of the kidneys/stomach.
Natural anti-inflammatory combo
- Boswellia (AKBA): blocks 5-LOX (leukotrienes).
- Omega-3 EPA/DHA: produces resolvins (resolves inflammation).
- The two attack different inflammatory pathways — a complementary effect.
What to look for on the label
- "Standardized to ≥30% boswellic acids" or "≥10% AKBA".
- Well-known brands: 5-Loxin®, AprèsFlex®, BosPure®.
Product in use: Nutricost Boswellia 600mg
Nutricost Boswellia Extract is the cost-effective option — 180 capsules of 600mg each (a bottle lasts 6 months at a dose of 1 capsule/day).
⚠️ AKBA standardization not declared: Nutricost lists "Boswellia Extract 600mg" but does not specify the AKBA percentage on the packaging or in a public lab report. The most consistent RCTs use extracts with ≥30% boswellic acids or ≥10% AKBA (5-Loxin®, AprèsFlex®). The generic extract still provides benefits via other boswellic acids (β-BA, KBA), but the clinical effect tends to be smaller. For more robust results in the knee/joint, consider a future upgrade to a standardized extract.
Practical strategy
- 1 capsule/day with lunch (with fat).
- Wait at least 4 weeks to notice an effect.
- If the knee does not improve in 6–8 weeks, switch to 5-Loxin® or AprèsFlex® (cost ~3× higher, but stronger clinical evidence).
